The Little Frogs Song's interesting origin


A lot of people have asked me what the weird but wonderful "Little Frogs Song" (Sma grodorna) is all about. It's such a big part of Swedish tradition and parties but I never knew where it came from or what it was all about. As with most Swedish things, I just accepted that it was weird and never questioned it. 

But, the "Little Frog Song", as it turns out, has an interesting history behind it. It turns out the song is actually a French military song called "Le chant de l'Oignon" which means "The Onion March". The Brits then made a parody of the song and changed some of the lyrics to "Au pas, grenouilles" - which means something like "in rhythm, little frogs" (or "i takt, sma grodor" in Swedish).
