Think Santa is a nice guy? Think again...

In the depths of Lapland’s Korvatunturi Mountains (in Finland), 486 metres deep, lies the closest guarded secret of Christmas. The time has come to dig it up.

"You better watch out, you better not cry, better not shout, I’m telling you why…" Based on the award winning shorts of director Jalmari Helander that have already acquired a cult reputation in the internet, Santa Claus is coming to town in a never-before-seen Christmas fantasy thriller.

"...He sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake, he knows if you've been bad or good…"
This Christmas everyone will believe in Santa Claus...
In cinemas from 3rd December across the UK. but here is a sneak preview for you:

Gingerbread house season

Pimp6The x-mas season is upon us and a traditional part of this in Scandinavia is to build and decorate your own gingerbread houses. Most tend to look a bit like the one on the left...

...but some people goes to the extremes with this (or simply just don't understand the concept) - like the Americans (surprise, surprise) who have built the biggest gingerbread house in the world (see picture on the right).

Pimp7The Norwegians also has gone a bit far by building a whole city of gingerbread houses (see picture on the left). It's called "Pepperkakebyn" and is situated in Begen.

If you want to join in the fun of building one, then Scandinavian Kitchen have gingerbread house kits from "Anna's" in Sweden for only £4.95.  All you need is to make some "glue" out of icing sugar and you're good to go. Add Smarties, M&Ms, more icing, candy canes, dancing penguins etc. etc. as decorations.

Halloween

"It's Halloween! It's Halloween!
The moon is full and bright,
And we shall see what can't be seen on any other night.
Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls,
Grinning goblins fighting duels,
Werewolves rising from their tombs,
Witches on their magic brooms.
In masks and gowns we haunt the street,
And knock on doors for trick or treat.
Tonight we are the king and queen,
For oh tonight it's Halloween!"

Yes, it's Halloween! This Saturday we are having two great parties to celebrate. So, put on a scary (or funny) costume and I'll see you there! All details can be found here:

Remember, remember...

"Remember, remember the 5th of November...". Bonfire night is now only around the corner. The capital has plenty of fireworks displays on during that weekend (5/11 - 7/11) all over London. Many have funfairs and sell food, but only some of them will sell and/or permit you bringing alcohol. Some displays are free, but most charge about £6.

Clapham Common hosts one of the biggest displays in town and it's FREE! The main fireworks display will start at 19:30 on the 5th November (please note that Clapham Common station is closed between 18.30 - 21:00).

The history of Guy Fawkes
Admittedly, the roots of Guy Fawkes aren’t as innocent as this lighthearted revelry implies. As a commemoration of a failed attempt to blow up Parliament, the night remembers a rather sombre occasion.
On November 5 1605, rebel Catholic soldiers demonstrated their dissent to the then anti-Catholic James I by planning to detonate 36 barrels of gunpowder under the House of Lords. The anti-Protestant Guy Fawkes, who was hired to carry out the plot, was caught with the gunpowder and his capture (and subsequent torture and execution) quickly became an annual source of Protestant celebration – hence, mocking up a Guy Fawkes to burn on the bonfire.
While the questionable religious sentiment behind the day has all but fizzled out, what we’re left with is a sparkly, traditional evening that’s purely about chomping on a sausage, warming your mitts on a hot drink and enjoying the colourful spectacle.

VPP's Crayfish Party

This is why I love crayfish parties!
On Saturday we hosted our annual Viking Party People Swedish Crayfish Party. And as usual, it was a really fun evening. Apparently the food was great (I don't eat seafood myself), lots of shots and booze, plenty of singing - incl. a 30min live gig by Oliver (this Scottsman singing "Ga & Fiska!" in Swedish was a real highlight!) and plenty of dancing in club afterwards finished off a great evening. Thank you Viking Party People... people... for being such a friendly and fun bunch! I was particularly impressed with two members flying in from Finland to only attend the party and fly back the following night. If you were unfortunate enough to miss this party, we are hosting our next great fun Saturday evening very soon; Oktoberfest. You can find more info about our Oktoberfest party here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=123510251010282&index=1

Reading Festival 2010

I spent last week with 100,000+ really annoying teenagers in Reading watching some really great (and a few really bad) performances from big and small rock bands - and I absolutely loved it! Luckily I had access to the VIP area so could get away from the kids when they got too punch-in-the-face-annoying. For next summer, I will try and figure out a way for Viking Party People to attend festivals together as I'm now completely hooked on festival life.

And here are the new Viking Party People Live Awards for Reading 2010:

Best gig: Weezer
Biggest positive surprise: Guns n' Roses
Best performance: Foxy Shazam
Best song: Welcome to the Jungle (Guns n' Roses)
Best moment: When Rivers Cuomo (lead singer in Weezer) put on a blond wig, started singing Pokerface, rolled around in the mud before jumping into the audience
Best party: Silent disco
Best DJ: DJ Micke (in the VIP tent)
Best discovery: That I now also like English cider
Biggest disapointment: The Libertines - absolutely rubbish!
Biggest confusion: Wether or not I enjoyed all the teenage girls in the crowd flashing their boobs (as they were just a bit too young to be doing that)
Worst moment: Realising that I was one of very few people at the festival that were old enough to know who Cypress Hill was
